TOKYO, May 30 – RIA Novosti. The Japanese government has decided to lift some of the sanctions against Syria in order to support international efforts to normalize the situation in the region. In particular, the assets of four Syrian banks will be unfrozen, the Japanese Foreign Ministry reported. The Industrial Bank, Popular Credit Bank, Savings Bank and Agricultural Cooperative Bank will be exempted from sanctions. "We have decided to lift sanctions against four financial institutions in order to support Syria's positive efforts and to help improve the living conditions of the Syrian people," Japanese Government Secretary-General Yoshimasa Hayashi explained at a press conference. Taking into account the latest changes, Japan's sanctions remain in effect against 59 individuals and 31 organizations. At the end of November 2024, armed groups of the Syrian opposition launched a large-scale offensive against the positions of the Syrian army and entered Damascus on December 8. Bashar al-Assad resigned as President of Syria and left the country. The head of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed al-Sharaa, was declared president of Syria for the duration of the transitional period on January 29.
