AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan filed a lawsuit against CHP Chairman Özgür Özel for non-pecuniary damages of 500 thousand TL.
Making a statement on the subject, Lawyer Hüseyin Aydın used the following expressions:
" A lawsuit for 500 thousand TL in non-pecuniary damages has been filed at the Ankara Civil Court of First Instance due to the baseless accusations, insulting statements and threatening words targeting our President in the press statement made by CHP Chairman Özgür Özel after the Central Executive Board meeting on July 5, 2025. In addition, a criminal complaint has been filed with the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office for the crime of insulting the President and threatening under Article 310/2 of the TCK. It is respectfully submitted for the public's information."
WHAT DID ÖZGÜR ÖZEL SAY?CHP Chairman Özgür Özel had addressed the public after the Central Executive Committee meeting held on July 5 following the detention of Adana Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Zeydan Karalar, Adıyaman Municipality Mayor Abdurrahman Tutdere and Antalya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Muhittin Böcek.
Özel also responded to Erdoğan's accusation that "Özgür Özel is inviting the public to the streets" as follows:
" The day I did it, I said, 'I invite you to the streets,' and they came. You imposed a 10-day ban, 1 million people gathered every night. Now I am inviting people to democracy protests in squares where we have previously notified them to protest and where security measures have been taken around them.
"I know the day I will invite them to the streets. Think about what state you will be in on that day. But don't make me invite this nation to the streets. Come to your senses."
Addressing the President, Özel said, "We will not let you sit there with 29 percent, Erdoğan. I will not let you sit there with 29 percent," and continued his words as follows:
AN INVESTIGATION HAS BEGUN"This nation will struggle to have ballot boxes installed, just as it struggled to have ballot boxes installed. After that, you will watch the democratic squares on TV, just like you watched the square in Egypt.
"We are not threatening anyone with a coup, but if someone attempts a coup, if someone tries to take the ballot box, this nation will bring it back with their own hands."
An investigation was launched against Özgür Özel due to his speeches after the MYK.
In the investigation report, charges of "incitement to commit a crime" and "insulting and threatening a public official due to his duty" were leveled.
