The " diploma " trial in which Ekrem İmamoğlu is being tried with a request for a prison sentence of up to 8 years and 9 months and a political ban will be heard on September 11.

An indictment was prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was suspended from his post as the Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) following his arrest, for the crime of "successive forgery of official documents" due to the allegation that his university diploma was obtained irregularly, requesting a prison sentence of 2 years and 6 months to 8 years and 9 months.

In the indictment, it was requested that İmamoğlu be deprived of certain rights stipulated in Article 53 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) if he is sentenced to prison for the intentional crime he committed.

In addition, the indictment requested that the documents that İmamoğlu allegedly obtained by forgery be confiscated in accordance with Article 54 of the Turkish Penal Code.

The first hearing of the case will be held on September 11 at the Istanbul 59th Criminal Court of First Instance.

DIPLOMA CASE AGAINST IMAMOGLU

An investigation was launched over allegations of "irregularities" regarding the diploma İmamoğlu received from Istanbul University's Faculty of Business Administration.

İmamoğlu had transferred from Girne American University to Istanbul University Faculty of Business Administration, and the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had argued that the transfer was irregular and his diploma was invalid.

On March 18, the Istanbul University administration announced that it had cancelled the diplomas of 28 people, including İmamoğlu, on the grounds of "absence" and "clear error."
