Brain activity decreases in ChatGPT users

Brain activity decreases in ChatGPT users

According to a study conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), people who use large language models (LLM) show lower brain activity and lose their original thinking skills. In the study, 54 people between the ages of 18-39 were divided into three groups. The participants were asked to write essays similar to the SAT exam. The first group used ChatGPT, while the second group used only Google. The third group wrote without using any auxiliary tools. The participants' brain activities were measured with EEG devices.

"LACK OF ORIGINALITY"

The results showed that those using ChatGPT had the lowest brain activity. Their texts were similar, lacked originality, and their effort levels dropped with each new attempt. This group also couldn’t remember much from their previous texts when asked to type without AI.

THE MOST CREATIVE PEOPLE ARE THOSE WHO TRY TO WRITE ON THEIR OWN

The group that didn’t use AI or search engines had the highest brain connectivity. They were more curious and motivated when writing, and they also reported greater satisfaction with the content they wrote. Although the sample size of the study was small, such early-stage studies are important in understanding the effects of AI, especially on brain development and learning. Previous studies accompanying the study have similar warnings. One study found that people who spent more time on systems like ChatGPT felt lonelier. Another study published in March found that productivity increased but motivation decreased.
