Virgin Media customers offered free Wi-Fi upgrade - are you in luck?

If you are a Virgin Media broadband customer, you might soon be offered a completely free upgrade that could see your Wi-Fi speeds improve instantly.
Customers who currently connect their smartphones, tablets, laptops and other smart devices to Virgin Media’s Hub 3 or Hub 4 Wi-Fi routers are being offered the newer Hub 5 model at no extra cost.
Virgin Media said the upgrade offer “aims to boost customers’ broadband performance around the home, making it smoother and more reliable, with the roll out benefitting thousands of customers before the end of the year before being expanded further in 2026.”
The offer is not open to all Virgin Media customers, though.
“Customers currently using a Hub 3 or Hub 4, and who we've identified as eligible for an upgrade, will be contacted directly as part of our initial rollout,” a Virgin Media spokesperson told Express.co.uk.
“They won’t need to take any action, Virgin Media will get in touch with them.”
Select customers will be offered a free Hub 5, which uses Wi-Fi 6 technology. This is the sixth generation of global Wi-Fi standard, and offers faster possible speeds compared to the older Hub 3 and Hub 4, which use Wi-Fi 5 tech.
In order to get Wi-Fi 6 speeds, which can exceed 1Gbps, you need a similarly fast fibre broadband connection, and also devices that themselves support Wi-Fi 6. Even if your router and broadband are capable of Wi-Fi 6 speeds, if your phone isn’t, you won’t see the benefit.
All iPhones including the iPhone 11 and later are compatible with Wi-Fi 6, as an example.
“Providing our customers with the very best broadband experience sits at the heart of Virgin Media O2,” said Gareth Lister, Director of Connectivity at Virgin Media O2.
“As our technology and products evolve, we’re committed to making it easier than ever for our customers to enjoy them. Not only will this upgrade benefit thousands of customers’ connectivity by enhancing their coverage, it will also future-proof their broadband services for new innovations to come.”
This attractive offer is not the only perk Virgin Media O2 has announced recently. As part of the merged firms’ Volt bundles, in which customers can buy both Virgin broadband and O2 mobile plans, you can now get double mobile data on every O2 plan in your household.
Not only that, you’ll also get inclusive roaming in 125 countries and a broadband speed boost to the next speed tier at no extra cost, up to the Gig1 plan.
