The UN hopes that the agreement between Pakistan and India will be lasting.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between India and Pakistan on Saturday, saying he hopes it "will contribute to lasting peace ."

"(Guterres) welcomes the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan as a positive step toward ending the current hostilities and easing tensions," his spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said in a brief statement.

According to Dujarric, Guterres hopes the pact will also foster an "enabling" environment for addressing "broader and long-standing issues between the two countries," and noted that the United Nations stands ready to support efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.

India and Pakistan announced today an immediate ceasefire , brokered by the United States , which would put an end to their worst escalation of violence in a century, which has left approximately 100 people dead.

The announcement of the truce came first at 5:55 p.m. Indian time (11:25 a.m. GMT) via a message on the Truth Social network by US President Donald Trump.

In his statement, the president asserted that the two nations had agreed to a "TOTAL AND IMMEDIATE" cessation of hostilities thanks to his country's intervention.

Both sides confirmed the news minutes after the US announcement, in an apparent coordinated action, although neither made public mention of the US role in the negotiations .

For his part, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that the talks between India and Pakistan will be moved to a neutral venue for continuation.

However, hours after the ceasefire , Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri accused Pakistan of violating the agreement and said Indian forces were responding proportionately.
