President Gustavo Petro questions Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the postponement of the Summit of the Americas
President Gustavo Petro questioned the postponement of the Summit of the Americas , which was to be held this December in the Dominican Republic. The decision was announced by the Dominican government after consultations with the administration of Donald Trump and other governments.
"After careful analysis of the situation in the region, the Dominican government has decided to postpone the Tenth Summit of the Americas until next year. This measure was agreed upon with our closest partners, including the United States , the original promoter of this forum," the Dominican Foreign Ministry stated.
The organization also stated that the decision is a response to the growing tensions between different countries in the region . "When we assumed the responsibility of organizing the Summit of the Americas, the profound differences that currently hinder productive dialogue in the Americas were unforeseeable," the statement reads.
The Colombian head of state reacted to the postponement of the event, stating that it would have been an opportunity for dialogue among the various participating nations . However, he criticized the fact that the invitation had not been extended to all countries on the continent.

"A summit that included all the American republics and Canada, and should have been the setting for a sincere, pragmatic and constructive dialogue, has failed. What a shame! " Petro said.
The Trump administration also issued a statement through US Secretary of State Marco Rubio : "We fully support the decision to postpone the summit and will continue to work with the Dominican Republic and other countries in the region to plan a productive event in 2026 that focuses on strengthening alliances and improving the security of our citizens."

President Petro added that the postponement would be a "failure" on Rubio's part, whom he accused of having intended to exclude several governments from the summit, to which Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba were not invited .
" This failure by Secretary of State Marco Rubio is very regrettable. It stems from his desire to hold a Summit of the Americas excluding countries, blinded by ideological hatred. The summit must be inclusive, pragmatic, and constructive, striving for a greater America, from Alaska to Patagonia," the president wrote on his Twitter account.
The region has not only experienced diplomatic tensions, but has also seen US attacks on boats in the Caribbean Sea that Trump claimed were involved in drug trafficking . This has led to significant clashes with the administration of Gustavo Petro, who was included on the Clinton List without evidence.
