Colombia officially recognizes esports as a national sport

With the approval of Law 2507, Colombia officially recognizes electronic sports (eSports) as a sporting discipline within the National Sports System. The law establishes a legal framework to structure, regulate, and promote this activity, fostering its development as a professional and competitive sector.
The law provides for the legal recognition of professional and amateur video game-based competitions. Additionally, it also allows for the creation of leagues, federations, and clubs within one year.
It's worth noting that the law prohibits pay-to-win schemes to ensure fair play. Player protection must also be guaranteed, with guidelines on physical and mental health, age limits, and digital security.

Likewise, incentives will be needed for the development of hardware, software, and international alliances.
According to industry projections, the video game and esports industry will generate revenues exceeding $600 million in Colombia by 2025. The country currently has venues such as the Movistar GameClub, the Claro Gamer Center, and events in public spaces, as well as an increase in academic and business initiatives for the development of specialized talent.

The Sandbox Foundation, an organization that promotes the appropriation of digital knowledge, highlighted the scope of the measure.
"eSports aren't just entertainment: they're an industry that generates opportunities, discipline, and collaboration. At Sandbox, we understand them as a legitimate training space for the future," said Diana Patricia Arenas Blanco, CEO of the foundation.
The organization called on stakeholders in the educational, institutional, business, and community ecosystem to coordinate efforts and take advantage of the new regulatory framework to strengthen capacities in digital environments.
