Villefranche-sur-Saône Court (69): then considered to have escaped from prison, an Algerian migrant nevertheless presents himself at the prefecture counter for administrative procedures; he is again absent during his trial for escape

Villefranche-sur-Saône Court (69): then considered to have escaped from prison, an Algerian migrant nevertheless presents himself at the prefecture counter for administrative procedures; he is again absent during his trial for escape

He's not exactly an escape artist. In May 2023, a 20-year-old man who had been granted semi-liberty a few days earlier at the Villefranche-sur-Saône remand center failed to return to his cell. He was arrested in August of the same year at the prefecture counter, where he appeared to complete some administrative procedures.

The Villefranche-sur-Saône judicial court heard his case on July 1st, in his absence. Free, he did not appear at the hearing. During his arraignment, the defendant explained that on May 19, 2023, he had missed his train back to the prison. Afterward, he no longer wanted to return.

The public prosecutor considered the Algerian national, known for drug-related offenses and aggravated theft, to be "a threat to public order." He requested a six-month prison sentence and a three-year ban from French territory. The court agreed, but limited the ban to two years.
