Super Typhoon Ragasa has killed at least fourteen people in eastern Taiwan, international news agencies reported overnight. The victims were killed when a natural dike breached. According to local authorities, eighteen people were also injured, and 124 people are still missing. The dike breach caused a lake to surge with water, sweeping away a bridge and flooding a nearby village. Ragasa previously ravaged the Philippines, where two people are known to have died.
A super typhoon is comparable to a Category 5 hurricane, the most powerful category of hurricanes. Ragasa reached maximum wind speeds of 270 kilometers per hour.
China and Hong KongMeanwhile, Ragasa is heading south of Hong Kong toward mainland China. Schools in Hong Kong are closed, and the international airport has also been closed since Tuesday evening local time.
In southeast China, schools and businesses have also been closed as a precaution in at least ten cities. In the city of Shenzhen, 400,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate.
