Warsaw Uprising National Remembrance Day is a Polish public holiday, celebrated since 2010 on August 1st, the anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising. The holiday was established on October 9th, 2009, at the initiative of the President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczyński.

On the 81st anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, various events are being organised across the voivodeship, including those prepared by the Institute of National Remembrance, Szczecin Branch, during which we will pay tribute to the Warsaw Uprising participants.

The main ceremonies, attended by Krzysztof Meciński, Director of the Szczecin Branch of the Institute of National Remembrance, will take place in Drawsko Pomorskie. Today, August 1, at 3:15 p.m., a plaque will be placed on the grave of Józef Ankiewicz, codename "Rtyku" ("Rtyku"), at the Municipal Cemetery in Drawsko Pomorskie at 11 Pułku Piechoty Street (sector 11, row 16, grave no. 7), announcing that the grave has been entered into the register of graves of veterans of the struggles for Poland's freedom and independence. Shortly afterward, a roll call will be held in accordance with military ceremonial, and a naming ceremony will be held for the square at the Municipal Cemetery (in front of the main gate at the Home Army Roundabout). The square will henceforth be named "Named after the Warsaw insurgent, Józef Ankiewicz, codename "Rtyku."

In Szczecin, the main celebrations will begin at 3:00 p.m. with a screening of the film "Warsaw Uprising" (dir. Jan Komasa, 2014) at the Przystanek Historia Educational Center at 1 Brama Portowa Square (Poseidon, 1st floor, admission to the screening – free).

At 4:45 p.m., in the square next to the Archcathedral Basilica of St. James the Apostle in Szczecin, insurgents and soldiers of the 14th West Pomeranian Territorial Defense Brigade will form the symbol of Fighting Poland.

At 5:00 PM, a Holy Mass will be celebrated in the Archcathedral Basilica for the intentions of the Homeland, the soldiers of the Warsaw Uprising, and the civilian victims of the population of Warsaw.

It's worth noting that yesterday, employees of the Szczecin Branch of the Institute of National Remembrance – the Office for Commemorating Struggle and Martyrdom – laid flowers and lit candles at the graves of veterans of the struggle for Poland's freedom and independence, Warsaw Uprising participants buried in Szczecin at the Central Cemetery on Ku Słońcu Street. A report from this event can be found on the website poczgarszczecinski.pl.

Of particular note is the fact that last Tuesday, the Szczecin Branch of the Institute of National Remembrance organized a lecture on the Warsaw Uprising entitled "W Hour" for inmates of the Szczecin Detention Center. For understandable reasons, the event was closed to the public.

On August 1, there will be workshops for scouts and a screening of the film "Faith 44" directed by K. Bojanowski for the scout camp in Pobierowo.

Also on Friday afternoon, there will be a screening of the above-mentioned feature film entitled "Warsaw Uprising" in the two largest cities of the region, Szczecin and Koszalin.

The Szczecin branch of the Institute of National Remembrance invites you to the world's only non-fiction war drama. Screenings will take place at Przystanki Historia in Koszalin at 6:00 PM (ul. Zwycięstwa 115), and in Szczecin at 3:00 PM (pl. Brama Portowa 1, Posejdon 1st floor).

As a reminder, this is a full-length, sound-added, color feature film depicting real-life participants in the Warsaw Uprising and the fighting in Warsaw, captured in film stills in 1944. The film was produced by the Warsaw Uprising Museum.

On the website of the Institute of National Remembrance, Szczecin Branch, you can read, among other things: "Discover the history of the last battle of the Second Polish Republic through the eyes of two young brothers who made the Uprising Newsreels for the Office of Information and Propaganda of the Home Army.

Initially, the heroes document the lives of civilians in the capital. However, searching for suitable shots, they become increasingly involved in the fighting. It then becomes clear that they are participating in something beyond their wildest imaginations – documenting the world after the apocalypse. They understand that they must save the tapes at all costs…"
