On July 21st of this year, the District Court in Przemyśl received an indictment against eight people involved in activities carried out within an organized criminal group operating in three voivodeships, including the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, which extorted money from victims using the so-called "policeman method."
Criminals are constantly inventing various methods to extort money from unaware individuals. One such method, which has proven quite effective, is the "police officer" scam, where criminals impersonate police officers to extort money from victims. They most often target elderly individuals. The scheme usually follows a similar scenario. Scammers call the victim posing as a police officer and typically inform them of a supposed accident involving a loved one, such as a son or daughter, claiming they need money to cover related expenses. They sometimes request money, claiming it's needed to avoid legal consequences for the loved one. They often apply emotional pressure to the caller to act without hesitation. We regularly publish reports about these types of scams, as they report new attempts at these types of crimes. The police also warn against them, reminding them that officers never ask for money or involve citizens in "undercover police operations." Despite this, many people still fall for the scam. An organized crime group has had considerable success in this area, operating in the Silesian, Pomeranian, and Podkarpackie Voivodeships from 2022 to 2023, extorting PLN 1.47 million from victims using the "policeman" scam.
