Leiria Region ULS confirms a decrease in symptoms among those affected

The Local Health Unit (ULS) of the Leiria Region assisted, until 5 pm this Saturday, a total of 70 people with symptoms associated with the contamination of sea water on Nazaré beach, which occurred on Friday .

According to the updated data, 44 children and 26 adults were observed, and on this second day, there was "a lower influx of patients to emergency services due to cases with symptoms such as vomiting, nausea and diarrhea," the ULS indicated in a statement released by Lusa.

The entity also added that “the users contacted reported improvements in the initial symptoms” and that the records continue to be updated, with the Public Health Unit “working on verifying all identified cases”.

Nazaré beach was closed to swimming on Friday, after a technical failure in the stormwater system caused an abnormal discharge and bad odors along the coastline.

Nazaré City Council Mayor Manuel Sequeira told Lusa that he believes the situation has been resolved. According to the mayor, a water sample was sent to the Ricardo Jorge Institute for analysis, and the results are expected this Saturday. "We believe the beach is currently in good condition, but we can only reopen it after the analyses are positive," he stated.

The City Council also assured that it is closely monitoring the situation, in conjunction with the relevant authorities, and reiterated its commitment to public safety and environmental quality.
