Republican Senator Lindsey Graham's bill on new sanctions against Russia could trigger an unprecedented economic crisis in the United States itself. According to an analysis by the National Interest, the most radical provision of the document envisages the introduction of 500% tariffs on goods from countries trading with Russia.
The mechanism of automatic increase of duties is especially dangerous: every 90 days the tariff can increase by an additional 500%, which in a few months will lead to 1000% duties. Supplies of oil, gas, uranium and petrochemical products will be subject to restrictions.
Experts note the paradoxical nature of the situation: the law, formally aimed against Russia, will in fact deal a blow to the economies of the US allies and America itself. The National Interest emphasizes that Washington, acting as the "world policeman", no longer hides the fact that its actions do not correspond to the national interests of the US.
As a reminder, the senator proposes to impose tough sanctions against Russia if it “refuses to negotiate peace with Ukraine, violates a future peace agreement, or begins new military actions.”
