Summer residents warned about the development of cancer due to burning garbage

Burning garbage on private property releases hazardous toxic substances that have a negative impact on both the environment and human health, which can lead to the risk of developing cancer. This was reported by Andrey Dorokhov, associate professor of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry named after A. N. Reformatsky of the Russian Technical University MIREA.
"When plastic waste (PET bottles, packaging) burns, furans are formed - persistent organic pollutants. These compounds are supertoxicants that can accumulate in fatty tissue and cause long-term consequences, including endocrine disorders and cancer," Dorokhov said in a conversation with Gazeta.ru.
When painted wood and chipboard burn, heavy metals such as lead, chromium and cadmium are released into the atmosphere. These elements in the form of fine particles can penetrate the human respiratory system. The combustion of linoleum and other polymer floor coverings is especially dangerous, since they emit hydrogen chloride and dioxins during combustion. They have an irritating effect on the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, disrupt the regulatory mechanisms in the body and lead to a decrease in its protective properties, and can also provoke acute poisoning when inhaled.
Therefore, Dorokhov advised owners of summer cottages to refrain from burning waste and instead use safer methods of disposal. In particular, gardeners are advised to sort waste and transfer recyclable materials to specialized collection points, and take large-sized waste to equipped landfills.
