WhatsApp photo scam: They steal all your data

WhatsApp photo scam: They steal all your data

A new scam method that is causing danger on WhatsApp works with a technique called 'steganography'. Cybercriminals hide malware inside photo files and send these files to users via WhatsApp. When users open these photos, the malware is loaded onto their devices, giving cybercriminals remote access.

According to the Times of India, this method can be used to obtain users' bank account information, passwords and other sensitive data. In some cases, cybercriminals can take complete control of the device and send messages or perform financial transactions on behalf of the user.

THINGS TO DO TO PROTECT

Don't open photos from unknown numbers: Don't download or open media files from people you don't know or if you notice unusual language use from people you know.

  • Turn off automatic downloads : Disable automatic media downloads from WhatsApp settings.
  • Always update : Make sure your device and apps are always up to date.
  • Use security software : Provide additional protection by installing a reliable antivirus program on your device.
  • Report suspicious activity : Report suspicious messages and content to authorities or WhatsApp support team.
