Algarve Regional Innovation Council meets to take stock of 2024-2025

The Algarve Regional Innovation Council (CIRA), promoted by the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR), IP, met on July 24 to take stock of the annual implementation of the Regional Strategy for Smart Specialization (EREI ALGARVE 2030).
The session was attended by around 60 participants, representing key entities in the regional innovation ecosystem, and took place in the same week that the region's progress was highlighted in the European Union's Regional Innovation Index, in which the Algarve joined the group of "moderate innovators", i.e. those with an innovation index between 70% and 100% of the EU average.
The opening, by the President of the Board of Directors of CCDR ALGARVE, José Apolinário, framed the evolution registered in the development of the region, focusing with particular attention on the scientific and technological system and highlighting the main innovation projects and infrastructures promoted with European funding managed within the framework of the ALGARVE 2030 Regional Program.
The analysis of the current status of the implementation and reprogramming of the ALGARVE 2030 Regional Program was carried out by Aquiles Marreiros, Executive Member of the respective Executive Committee, having also presented the proposals for new lines of financing for the regional production capacity of new dual-use equipment and technology, particularly in the area of the maritime economy.
The meeting's first panel focused on the implementation of EREI ALGARVE 2030 for the 2024-2025 biennium, addressing the governance model, Innovation and Collaboration Platforms (PIC), and other relevant field actions. A forum was also provided for discussion and sharing among CIRA members of other regional initiatives impacting the strategy.
The second panel presented practical examples of entrepreneurial discovery in the region, in particular the development of Innovation Communities by the Algarve Region Business Association (NERA), Algarve Evolution's actions in the technological field, namely the Algarve Tech Hub Summit, and the winning project of the "Ideias em Caixa 2025" competition, authored by the company AuroraMed.
The meeting ended with a broad consensus on the importance of the work carried out by universities, associations, companies and public entities, reinforcing the commitment to ensure the continuity and strengthening of the network that ensures the implementation of EREI ALGARVE 2030, with the commitment to increase the results to be achieved in 2025-26 in deepening the regional innovation ecosystem, continuing the ongoing work driven by the Regional Planning and Development Unit of CCDR ALGARVE.
