Speech therapists support migrants' breastfeeding

" Prioritizing breastfeeding: building sustainable support networks" is the motto of World Breastfeeding Week, celebrated annually between August 1st and 7th. "In Portugal, exclusive breastfeeding continues to face challenges, especially among migrant populations, where linguistic, cultural, and social barriers can compromise the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding," states the University of Aveiro (UA).
It is in this context that the doctoral project of Ana Cláudia Lopes, a student of the Doctoral Program in Rehabilitation Sciences, under the supervision of Marisa Lousada, from the UA School of Health, fits in.
The research proposes an "innovative and still little explored approach": the direct involvement of speech therapists in supporting breastfeeding among migrant women in primary health care, as "professionals qualified to intervene in oral functions from birth."
